October 18–19, 2025 (Saturday & Sunday) — Participation in Disaster / Trailing / Human Remains Detection (HRD) Study Session in Nishimeya Village, Aomori Prefecture Over the two days of October 18 (Saturday) and 19 (Sunday), 2025, we participated in a Disaster / Trailing / HRD study session hosted by the NPO Northeastern Tohoku Search Dog Team, held in Nishimeya Village, Aomori Prefecture. On the first day, we focused on how each participating handler-dog team can approach their individual challenges and improve through targeted training. Lectures and practical sessions were provided on the basics of Trailing and Human Remains Detection (HRD), with cadaver dogs used specifically for the HRD training. On the second day, we introduced foundational obedience training along with basic Disaster Search exercises. For Trailing, based on recent deployment experiences, each team worked on training elements tailored to their specific needs for improvement. For HRD (Human Remains Detection), training was structured around actual field experience, using cadaver dogs to help teams assess their current status and identify clear steps for future development. Although the afternoon of the first day brought rain, we were able to continue training by using a sheltered part of the facility. Thankfully, the second day was blessed with beautiful weather, and from early morning, we enjoyed a fun, inspiring, and fulfilling training session full of laughter and discovery. This workshop, which brought together 13 promising search dogs and highly motivated handlers, turned out to be an incredibly enriching and productive two-day experience. We sincerely appreciate all the support and hospitality we received.
When training for exam-related exercises, it is important to tailor the approach based on factors such as the dog’s breed, temperament, personality, and living environment. Without properly analyzing what the current issue is and why it has become a challenge, simply focusing on the visible surface-level problem will not lead to meaningful improvement.
Because owner-handlers live with their dogs every day, they are uniquely positioned to identify training opportunities in daily life, put them into practice, and then validate their progress during joint training sessions. However, when daily routines become vague or inconsistent, those shortcomings tend to show up as challenges during group training. Take a moment to reflect on your goals: What kind of dog do you want to raise, and how do you want to shape their abilities? By reaffirming your objectives and making everyday training both enjoyable and purposeful, you can continue to improve the completeness and performance of your team as a search dog unit.
Disaster training
A key factor in the development of both handlers and search dogs is the person acting as the victim. For intermediate-level dogs or those that have already passed certification tests, training can often be successfully conducted by having the person acting as the victim hide at a designated location with a reward. However, this same type of setup is sometimes introduced too early with beginner-level dogs, without going through the essential foundational steps. As a result, the training becomes less enjoyable for the dog, and they may start responding to distracting stimuli instead. This has become a common issue. To address this, it is crucial to break down and reinforce the foundational stages, and to continue with highly motivating training that keeps dogs engaged and successful. And what is absolutely indispensable to making such fun and effective training possible? The person acting as the victim. This applies not only to Disaster Search but also to Trailing. A skilled person playing the role of the victim—someone who can capture the dog’s attention—is essential for developing a high-performing search dog. Within the team, we should aim to understand the individual characteristics of each dog and work together to improve our quality as victim role players, so we can provide appropriate and effective support to each team during training. Lastly, all search dog teams should integrate bark alert strengthening exercises into their daily routines, as this is a critical skill for any Disaster Search Dog.
Trailing training
Due to certain discrepancies between the current certification standards for search dogs during peacetime deployments and the actual demands encountered in real-world search operations, we have decided to consider the introduction of Trailing into our program.
We reviewed each team’s current training methods and provided foundational knowledge and basic exercises to support their transition into Trailing work.
The role of the person acting as the victim is especially important here. By moving the scent article at the start, the person playing the victim helps stimulate the dog’s motivation and strengthens the association between the scent trail and the victim. Maintaining and increasing the dog’s motivation after reaching the victim is essential. Therefore, even if the dog has already completed foundational training, this type of reinforcement should always be included as the dog progresses through more advanced stages.
HRD training
Based on previous deployment experiences, each team conducted foundational HRD (Human Remains Detection) training. All teams were able to strengthen their recognition of the target odor, and successfully cleared their ORT (Odor Recognition Test).
We reviewed the current pairing progress with the target odor and, as a step-up exercise, conducted an ORT (Odor Recognition Test) using multiple blocks to confirm the dogs’ recognition of the scent.
By adjusting the timing of the reward and how praise is given, participants came to understand that the dog’s alert posture toward the target odor becomes more stable. Let’s start by focusing on maintaining a steady indication (pause) at the odor source, and then gradually step up to a fully developed TFR (Trained Final Response).
