NSA Trailing/Disaster/HRD Training

On September 8, 2024 (Sunday), Trailing, Disaster Search, and HRD training were conducted beginning at 05:00 AM.

Trailing Unit

n the Trailing training, each unit worked on exercises designed to address their current training challenges.
Despite the early start, temperature and humidity levels were still relatively high, requiring careful monitoring of the dogs’ concentration during the work.
The training focused on confirming negative indications at trail turns and working across different surface conditions, while maintaining short trail distances to ensure effective training under the environmental conditions.

Disaster Unit

Disaster
In the Disaster training, each unit began working on exercises addressing their current training objectives starting at 06:00 AM.

Along with reinforcing the dogs’ motivation toward the helper, the training revealed several areas that require further development, including maintaining appropriate handler–dog working distance and strengthening independent search initiative. These objectives should be actively addressed both as a team and at the unit level.
Increasing experience in indoor search environments will also be important, and in real deployments there will be a strong need for accurate pinpoint alerts. Future training will therefore continue to focus on developing these operational skills.

HRD Unit

In the HRD training, exercises focused on maintaining proper handler–dog working distance while strengthening the dogs’ search drive and independent search initiative.
As in the previous session, the training also emphasized the challenge of handling the dog while interpreting wind direction and scent movement. These skills are being developed through training so they can be effectively applied during operational search deployments.

In this scenario, the primary odor source was set relatively large, but due to high humidity and calm wind conditions, scent dispersion was limited, creating a challenging exercise even within a relatively small search area.
As the working distance between the handler and the dog increases, it becomes important to confirm whether the dog can confidently remain at the source and maintain a clear final alert. This will remain a key point for future training.
In addition, further evaluation and refinement of the alert posture will also be considered.
