NSA Trailing/Disaster/HRD Training
2025年6月8日(日曜日)Trailing/Disaster/HRD 訓練会を開催しました。
On Sunday, June 8, 2025, we held a Trailing / Disaster / HRD training session. The teams assembled at 6:00 AM at the headquarters materials yard.
The Trailing unit conducted both foundational training and step-up scenarios in an urban environment, focusing on each team’s current challenges.
The HRD unit carried out intensive TFR training and search exercises in areas simulating landslide conditions as well as vehicle searches. Each team worked on identifying areas for improvement and took steps toward their next training goals.
The Disaster unit focused on enhancing search accuracy through various scenarios set up within the materials yard.

During the motivation runs, we varied the helpers and course layouts to assess whether the dogs were correctly recognizing the scent trail. These sessions went beyond simply boosting motivation—they also served as a transition toward the next level of training.
In the scent article training, two units worked under the following conditions: temperature of 20°C, cloudy with occasional light rain, approximately 70% humidity, light breeze, a trail length of about 300 meters, two turns, and a 15-minute aging time.

The course led from a main road through a residential area, including small intersections and side streets along the way. It followed a downhill path, with a section featuring a guardrail partway down the slope—an area where scent tends to disperse more easily.

In the presence of various distractions such as vehicles, bicycles, dogs being walked, people working in nearby fields, pedestrians, and tempting scents, accurately interpreting the dog’s response requires extensive experience with a wide range of training scenarios.

While the trails for each unit were similar in design, differences emerged in the dogs’ negative responses at intersections and side streets, as well as in the handlers’ ability to read these reactions and respond appropriately. These aspects revealed areas for future improvement in both interpretation and handling.
HRD training
As the temperature rose and humidity remained high, extended search times posed a risk of reduced accuracy. To address this, the target scent was buried approximately 5 cm deep in the designated search area before the training began at 6:00 AM. Each unit then began its search approximately two hours later. The general environmental conditions were: temperature 24°C, cloudy skies, humidity around 70%, and a southeast wind at approximately 1 meter per second.

Since the search starting point was on an uphill slope from the upwind side of the hot point, a key consideration was whether the handler should guide the dog downwind toward the hot point, or allow the dog to conduct a free search using its mobility to catch the scent cone from the downwind side.

All units showed a noticeable change in nose position and movement speed within approximately 3 meters of the hot point, clearly indicating through body language that the scent cone had been detected. The key areas for improvement are the transition speed into the TFR and the refinement of scratching behavior. In actual search environments, maintaining the TFR posture may not always be possible. Therefore, rather than focusing solely on the TFR itself, it is crucial to ensure that the dog can give a clear and pinpoint response. Scratching behavior needs to be addressed carefully and systematically, starting from foundational training, to achieve prompt improvement.
At this stage, due to limitations in the size of the target scent, the vehicle search was conducted with slight openings left in the car doors rather than in fully sealed conditions. The training involved searches across three vehicles, including scenarios that required the dogs to give a zero response.

Each unit displayed its own distinct characteristics, but all units consistently showed a clear response at the target scent location.
Disaster training
This time, training was designed to focus on pinpoint alerts in scenarios where the victim was obstructed by barriers. Search exercises were conducted for victims located inside a building and inside a vehicle.

In obstructed scenarios, although the dogs did display body language indicating scent detection, there were instances where they were unable to confidently give a bark alert. Ongoing reinforcement is necessary to build their confidence through repeated successful search experiences.

There were extended periods during which the dogs had difficulty showing clear awareness of the victim inside the vehicle. However, this provided valuable training opportunities, including on-lead searches, allowing the teams to gain important experience.
